Grand Tour Souvenir Bulla Locket

$4,500.00
sold out

The holy grail of Victorian jewelry; a Grand Tour souvenir. Here, an 1850’s gold Bulla locket in the ancient Roman style, with exquisite micro mosaic on one side and granulated gold on the other, with the words ROMA and AEI. A bulla was an ancient Roman amulet worn by young boys to ward off evil. AEI, from Greek, means “now and forever”. It also signified “Amity, Eternity, Infinity “ to the Victorians.

The micro mosaic features a dove of peace on a pale blue background with white flowers, surrounded by navy, red, and white geometric designs all done by the highest quality artisans of the famed Vatican workshop.

The Roma center opens and a small memento can be placed inside. The large bail can accommodate even the largest chain.

Excellent antique condition with only a few tesserae missing - seen only with magnification. There are a few dents and one small slice in the gold - again, not noticeable.

18k, with Papal crown and crossed keys hallmark for Vatican. Weighs about 23 grams. Measures a little more than an inch wide by a little over 2 inches long.

These come along so rarely now, and the ones with ROMA are the most desired of all.

Chain sold separately.
